Civil Rights


Equality relates to Civil Rights in the way that every citizen should have equal rights. These civil rights are important to the U.S citizens because it defends their rights and liberties.

The Declaration of Independence was written to declare the rights and freedom of the citizens that live in the U.S, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness Before these civil rights became a law the colonies where being violated. The states made a law that soldiers could enter people's homes and consume their food and stay as long as they desired. Also the king would use his powers by changing laws to his advantage. The colonies became tired of these unfair actions therefore they decided to agree to brake free from the ruling of the British Crown And the State of Great Britain. They had the power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do. All representatives in all thirteen states sign and pledge to protect the declaration with their lives, wealth and honors.

Obama's presidency signifies the beliefs of the civil rights leaders of the past because they believed in equal rights for everyone not differentiating on their race. Certain aspects have not changed like racism even though we have a black president. A lot of people where doubting Obama's presidential victory just because of his color. There were many death threats made to Obama and his family. Racism is all over the world, it is the hate from one race towards another and the believe that one race is superior. These thoughts create many conflicts between races because they sometimes try to resolve their differences by using violence. To have Obama as president of the United States is like starting a new chapter and also showing progress as the human raise.

Bill Cosby's"Pound Cake Speech" speech relates to concepts of the Bill of Rights because it talks about the rights that it distributes to all citizens. Like the right to speak your mind, the right to learn and socialize disregarding anyones raise. People's rights shouldn't be pushed over for anther's everyone has the right to equality and fair judgment. In this speech he talks about how the latest generations don't take advantage of the opportunities that past conflicts like Brown Vs. Board of Education have created. Brown Vs. Board of Education was a trial to stop segregation in schools, they won the trial and school segregation was abolished. Bill Cosby is trying to explain that the conflict isn't with the white man is with their own, with does kids that like to stand on the corner and don't go to school.

The story "Harrison Bergeron"by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr shows the extreme side of equality, the side that restricts talented people from exceeding by doing what they do best. By handicapping a person is breaking the purpose of civil rights because it limits the persons ideas and freedom of speech. The idea of equality is not meant to be interpreted in this way, its meant to be used to equalize the rights and freedom of a citizen. These rights should never be stepped on for any reason unless the person has committed a crime or is using them to violate others.

The poems by "The Forerunners" proves that people without certain rights had ideas of why didn't they have the same rights as others. The poem "Ain't I a Woman?" by "Sojourner Truth"describes the idea's of a woman that believes that man and woman should have the same rights because a woman can do the same things a man can"I could work as much and eat as much as a man". African Americans have been fighting for equality with the white man for hundreds of years. This fight for equality has brought upon a lot of blood and suffering, different races have been alienated from the typical way of living that the founding fathers had in mind. Langston Hughes describes this struggle in "Children's Rhymes" which is from the point of view from an African American child that talks about his view of inequality, how the laws favor the whites folks and how he has no chance in succeeding "I know I have no chance in being president".
